CDC's Developmental Milestones App

CDC’s Developmental Milestones are a set of key skills in playing, learning, speaking, acting, and moving that most children can do by a certain age, covering birth to 5 years.  The guidelines were significantly updated in February 2022 for the first time since 2004, shifting the benchmark from the average age (50%) to the age by which 75% of children are expected to achieve a milestone to encourage earlier identification of delays.

The updated checklists include new milestones for 15-month and 30-month ages and adjust several existing benchmarks, such as moving the expectation for walking alone from 12 months to 15 months and the vocabulary of 50 words from 24 months to 30 months.  These milestones are intended as communication tools for parents and providers, not as diagnostic or screening tools; if a child is missing a milestone, it should prompt a conversation with a healthcare provider for formal screening.

Key resources for tracking development include the free CDC Milestone Tracker app (iOS and Android), which provides illustrated checklists and videos, and the Milestones in Action photo and video library.  Parents can also access printed or digital checklists in multiple languages through the Learn the Signs.  Act Early. program website.

Program Overview:

Minnesota Tribal Resources for Early Childhood Care (MNTRECC)

provides services throughout the state of Minnesota in cooperation with Child Care Aware of MN and Tribal Child Care Programs of the 11 federally recognized tribes throughout Minnesota.

MNTRECC is managed through the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Early Childhood Development Division.

Funding is provided through a grant with the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families.

Program Goal: Healthy, Thriving American Indian Children and Families

Program Mission: To provide statewide leadership by creating partnerships, resources and supports that serve to connect and strengthen early care and education for American Indian children and their families within the State of Minnesota.

Do you love working with children? Are you interested in a meaningful career in child care and early childhood education? Empower to Educate is here for you. You will receive personal support from a local Workforce Advisor who can help guide you on your path. Our program also offers financial support, free training options, job placement support, and an opportunity to be mentored by an experienced early childhood educator.

Our 14 workforce advisors around the state have already assisted over 200 aspiring early educators, with another 500 currently in the program. This is a program of the Child Care Aware of Minnesota, This initiative is made possible (or funded in part) with a grant from the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families.

Benefits:

Empower to Educate helps current and aspiring early childhood educators begin, advance, and sustain their child care careers.

We offer:

• Personal support from a local Workforce Advisor.
• $300 to help you complete training requirements.
• $600 after working in a Minnesota child care program for six months.
• A free training package in English, Spanish, or Somali.
• Job skills training like resume writing and interview coaching
• Help accessing and navigating technology
• Connect to low- to no-cost college classes and early childhood certificate programs
• The Empower to Educate Mentorship Program

Eligibility:

Empower to Educate Participants must:

• Be at least 16 years old
• Be able to pass a background study
• Be interested in a career at a licensed or certified child care program in Minnesota
• Complete and sign an Empower to Educate Participant Agreement Form

Empower to Educate participants are:

• New to the field educators, people interested in beginning careers at licensed or certified child care center programs or family child care programs
• Educators recently working in the field, aides, substitutes
• People with some college-level education but have never worked in the child care or early education field
• Educators recently working in the field with some professional development and are interested in beginning a career path with additional coursework or training

Getting Started:

• Reach out to your local Workforce Advisor through the Empower to Educate interest form to connect and get started.
• Attend a Empower to Educate information session in-person or online.
• Along with your Workforce Advisor, complete the Empower to Educate onboarding process
